Modern Foreign Languages

“Learning a language enriches the curriculum. It provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enhance the overall teaching and learning experience. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained can make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture/s and those of others.” The Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages (DfES 2005)

At Marden Primary School our emphasis for teaching Modern Foreign Languages is on enjoyment. This is achieved through practical application, and through making relevant links with other curriculum areas.

As you may be aware, we have taught French at Marden over the last few years. However, we have decided to start teaching Spanish as of September 2018. This is because, we believe that Spanish is spoken in more places around the world and would be more beneficial for the children to learn. Therefore, we have introduced Spanish to years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6 are going to continue learning French.
