WHAT WE ARE LEARNING IN TERMS 5 and 6
The next two terms will see us covering various genres in English and we will begin with a study of the book 'The Gorilla'.
In Topic, we will start Term 5 by looking at Rainforests. This is an interesting and exciting topic and one which is at the centre of the climate change debate. In Term 6 we will be exploring a new topic: Road Trip USA. This will have a mainly geographical focus, looking at the vast landscapes and climates of the USA
What will my child be studying next term?
Topics and what I can do to help
'Rainforests' and 'Road Trip USA'
Through our Rainforests topic we will explore the geography of the different regions and look in detail about the make up of a rainforest. Library books will help give children an understanding of these climates while the internet will provide lots of information all about the rainforests. A discussion / look at the newspapers should help to set the context for why rainforests are so important.
Road Trip USA - a search through travel brochures will help the children to understand the different areas you can visit. Children may also benefit from exploring a world map and more localised maps of the USA to help them to understand the scale of the country that we are exploring.
Homework is set every Friday and needs to be returned by Wednesday of the following week. Homework is differentiated to enable different ability groups to access the same homework. Our homework follows a cycle of English, Maths and Topic and this cycle is repeated. As well as the homework, times tables are expected to be practised at home as there is a weekly times tables test. Find out your child’s times tables colour by asking them or looking in their reading record/homework book. Reading frequently is also part of homework and this, including tables practise and the set homework, should take up to 90 minutes.

This purple book is something that children can write in to express their feelings, draw pictures to accompany their writing and to write anything that they wish e.g. stories. Writing journals can go home to carry on stories etc, but are used daily at morning registration and after lunch registration, so they need to come back into school to continue this work.
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD AT HOME
Read as frequently as possible with your child at home. Ask them questions about what they are reading so that they develop their inference and deduction skills. Reading frequently will also help with the development of their fluency and expression.
Times tables information
All Year 3 children begin their times tables at the same stage (2x Jade). Year 4 children will begin their times tables where they finished at the end of Year 3. Children can bring home their marked test to show their parent's their score. After the weekly test, if they have achieved 100%, they receive a certificate and move onto the next stage.
The times tables below identify which times table children are working on in each colour. Please refer to this if you are unsure about which times tables your child should be learning.
